The Foundation of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) announced April 9 a $100,000 donation to the newly created Sandra Day O’Connor Legacy Fund, which benefits iCivics in furtherance of its mission to reinvigorate civic education. The donation was announced by IADC Foundation President David Rosenberg, a Partner at Weber Gallagher, during the IADC’s Northeast Regional Meeting held April 9 at Mayer Brown LLP’s New York City office. The Sandra Day O’Connor Legacy Fund was announced April 15 in Washington, D.C.

The Foundation of the IADC is a longtime supporter of iCivics. Founded by O’Connor in 2009, iCivics has provided more than 7 million K-12 students with the tools they need for active participation and democratic action. The Sandra Day O’Connor Legacy Fund was established specifically to support the organization’s current operations and growth and to ensure iCivics continues to engage the next generation of citizens.

“iCivics is a phenomenal organization and we are very proud and privileged to support its efforts,” said The Foundation of the IADC Board of Directors President David J. Rosenberg. “Millions of educators and students rely on and benefit from the quality resources that iCivics provides. The Legacy Fund will serve to broaden the organization’s impact and mission.”

“We are incredibly grateful for The Foundation of the IADC’s generous contribution and ongoing support of iCivics.  We are thrilled that the Foundation is a pioneer in helping to launch the Sandra Day O’Connor Legacy Fund,” said iCivics Executive Director Louise Dubé. “The fund will help ensure that iCivics can prepare the future generations of informed students who are prepared for active, intelligent citizenship. This would not be possible without our phenomenal community partners, particularly the IADC who have been with us from the beginning.”

In addition to The Foundation of the IADC’s donation announcement, the Regional Meeting also featured presentations by former Chief Justice Deborah Poritz; iCivics Board Member Robert Henry, who is the former Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit and the president of  Oklahoma City University, as well as  Lawrence S. DiCara, Esq, a Nixon Peabody attorney, political author and former Boston City Councilman. Ms. Poritz, Mr. Henry and Mr. DiCara discussed the importance of developing an informed and responsible citizenry, and specifically, education directed at the acceptance and understanding of rights, responsibilities, and the divergent views of others.

“Today’s event and The Foundation of the IADC’s announcement mark the beginning of what is sure to be a momentous season for iCivics,” said Henry. “Not only did this generate an extraordinary level of excitement for the Legacy Fund, it also generated significant dialogue surrounding iCivics’ mission.”
