As we come out of the holiday season, and with all due respect to Andy Williams, I offer some thoughts on this odd time of the year, January, when there seems to be nothing to look forward to and everything enjoyable is behind us. By the way, points to you if you know who Andy Williams is.
I am often asked if there is a busy time during the year for family law attorneys. Based on over 30 years of experience, my busiest time for new clients is right after the start of the new year, followed closely but the time around Labor Day when school reopens. My theory is that each of these times have been set aside as a kind of “reset.” In January, the calendar resets; at the end of the summer, the school year restarts. In each instance there is an accent on starting off fresh. I think this lends itself to people reaching out to a family law attorney to reset their personal life.
I do not profess to being a psychologist with any analytical explanation as to the rise in new cases at these two times of the year. Perhaps there is a desire to get the family through the holidays, or maybe it stems from being overwhelmed by the children over the summer. I just know that there is a noticeable increase in people wanting to talk to me.
My advice to anyone feeling the need to call someone like me this January, or September, is to go right ahead. You are not alone and my staff and I are aware of your needs.
