Look What You Made Me Sign: The Swift-Kelce Prenup Question

The Life of a Showgirl has reached New Heights as the Fearless super couple Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have announced their engagement. Although there is much speculation of the wedding date and where it will take place, the real question is whether the newly engaged couple will have a prenuptial agreement.

Prenuptial agreements help protect assets a party is bringing into the marriage. A prenuptial agreement also provides direction as to what will happen to any marital assets in the event of divorce. Superstars that have music rights, million dollar homes, endorsement contracts, merchandise sales, and high net worth are certainly candidates for a prenuptial agreement and should have a serious discussion about whether their assets will be comingled or kept separate during the marriage. But individuals who are not billionaires may also want to consider a prenuptial agreement. Perhaps one of the parties is a business owner and wants to protect the family business in the event of divorce. Maybe one of the parties has adult children and there is a concern the new spouse will reap the benefits of one party’s fortune.

In fact, Taylor herself stated she fought so hard to recover her master recordings of her first six albums because they represented her life, her drawings, and she didn’t want the children of the investment group to one day own something she had created.

Prenuptial agreements serve many roles and should be carefully considered in advance of marrying. A well thought out agreement will protect premarital assets and help provide a guide in the event of divorce.
