Pro Bono Spotlight: Pro Bono Can Be Fun!

Written by Lawrence “Skip” Persick, Partner & Pro Bono Leader

A few months back, Ryan McBride, a Partner in Weber Gallagher’s Scranton Office, resolved a liability case for an individual referred by Lackawanna Pro Bono. Ryan’s client and his lady-friend were coming home to the client’s apartment they shared when her dog bit someone outside the building. This individual contacted a local personal injury lawyer who filed suit. Any sort of a judgment against the client would not only affect the client’s pocketbook, but also his right to maintain the apartment.

Ryan saved the day by pointing out to opposing counsel that not only was his client virtually judgment-proof, but it was a 5-pound dog and obviously could not have caused much of an injury. Realizing there is no deep pocket here, opposing counsel withdrew the suit. Ryan’s client, his lady-friend, and her dog “Fang,” are all living happily ever after.

Good job Ryan and thank you for taking the case!
